Renewing your driving licence

When your driving licence is about to expire, you are required to renew your driving licence if you want to continue driving. Use this service when you want to renew your driving licence.

You can use this service 6 months before your current driving licence will expire. If your driving licence has already expired, you can use this service to renew it if no more than 2 years have passed since your group 1 driving licence for a moped, light quadricycle, tractor, motorcycle and/or passenger car expired or if no more than 1 year has passed since your group 2 driving licence for a truck or bus expired.

In some specific cases, your driving health data will need to be retrieved from the Patient Data Repository. For more information, see the section below titled "Driving health related conditions for using the service". Read more about renewing your driving licence here.

If you have not yet added your email address to the service, you can do so by going to the Personal Information tab after you have logged in to the service. Add your email address before paying for the service. After you have submitted your payment, you will be sent a driving licence order confirmation to the email address you provided.

Driving health related conditions for using the service

In some cases, using the service may require that your driving health data is retrieved from the Patient Data Repository. See below if retrieving the driving health data is compulsory or voluntary for you.

Your driving health data must be saved to the Patient Data Repository on form F122 (medical certificate on driving capacity) by a doctor. The medical certificate may not date back to more than six months. The service will retrieve the required driving health data by your consent.

If you are required to retrieve your driving health data, but your driving health data is not available digitally, you will not be able to use the service. In such cases, you will need to submit your driving licence permit application to a service point of Ajovarma, a Trafi service provider. There, you must prove that you meet the necessary driving health requirements with a printed medical certificate that you received from your doctor.

Voluntary driving health data retrieval

You will not need to submit a medical certificate to renew your driving licence if

  • you are no older than 70 years of age and you have a valid group 1 driving licence, or
  • you are under 44.5 years of age and you have a valid group 2 driving licence.

If you have visited a doctor and a medical certificate on your driving capacity has been saved to the Patient Data Repository, you can retrieve your driving health data after you have logged on to the service if you wish. Retrieving your health data may be necessary if your physician has changed the conditions or restrictions associated with your driving licence. These changes must be recorded in the medical certificate on driving capacity.

Based on the medical certificate saved to the Patient Data Repository, a special condition may be added to your driving licence, or an existing condition may be removed. Your special conditions may also remain the same. The most common special condition is 01, which indicates that the driver must wear glasses or contact lenses while driving.

Obligatory driving health data retrieval

You must retrieve your driving health data from the Patient Data Repository to renew your driving licence if

  • you have a valid group 1 driving licence and
    • you are over 70 years of age (in which case you will need a comprehensive medical certificate), or
  • you have a valid group 2 driving licence and
    • you are over 44.5 years of age (in which case you will need a standard medical certificate), or
    • you are over 67.5 years of age (in which case you will need a comprehensive medical certificate), or
  • your driving licence has expired (depending on your age and driving licence category, you will always need to submit either a standard or a comprehensive medical certificate).

Based on the medical certificate saved to the Patient Data Repository, a special condition may be added to your driving licence, or an existing condition may be removed. Your special conditions may also remain the same. The most common special condition is 01, which indicates that the driver must wear glasses or contact lenses while driving.

Alternative service channels

You can also renew your driving licence at an Ajovarma service point.

You can renew your driving licence only at Ajovarma if the renewal requires submitting a medical certificate and your driving health data is not available in the Patient Data Repository.
