What is a certificate and why do I need it?
A certificate is a code six characters long, which a watercraft or vehicle owner entered in the register can create free of charge using the online My e-Services when selling or transferring a watercraft or vehicle to a new owner. The seller transfers the certificate to the buyer who, during the registration of transfer of ownership, presents the certificate via the online My e-Services. The certificate is valid for 14 days in the case of watercraft and 14 days for vehicles. However, you must register the vehicle within 7 days since the transfer of ownership.
The buyer can check the validity of the certificate free of charge using the 'Check the validity and details of the certificate' service. At the same time, the buyer is given the name of the vehicle owner entered in the register and information on any possible restrictions, such as lack of vehicle inspection or unpaid vehicle tax.
How can I check whether my electronic commissioning or decommissioning has entered into force?
If you get to the confirmation page at the end of the registration session, this means that the registration notification has been successful and the desired change is in force. You can check this from the vehicle data section in My e-Services. Updating vehicle data may take several minutes.
If you do not get to the confirmation page and the measures taken do not appear in the vehicle data section of My e-Services, you will need to verify that the registration notification has been saved. Verify that the payment has been charged from your account. If the charge has not posted to your account, the registration notification has not been recorded. Complete the registration notification again. Commissioning a vehicle for road traffic use is free of charge and you can try completing it again if it was unsuccessful.
If you can't complete the notification even after a second attempt, contact customer service
If updating the registration notification failed, the vehicle must not be used!
How can I check whether the registration certificate order I placed in the electronic service was successful?
If you are shown a confirmation page after the order, the registration certificate order was successful. You will receive your new registration certificate by mail within seven days.
If you are not shown the confirmation page, you must ensure whether or not the registration notification was successful. To do so, use the message form or call the customer service.
My bank statement shows that I was charged the electronic registration fee twice. How can I get the extra fee back?
Notify us by calling Trafi's customer services > e-Services. For the refund, you must inform Trafi of
- the name and contact information of the person who submitted the registration notification
- the bank account number of the person who submitted the notification
- the vehicle's registration number and
- the date when the electronic register notification was submitted.
I am not able to submit an electronic registration. The system says "The electronic registration services cannot be used because the vehicle has...". Why is this?
You cannot submit a notification in the electronic service if an entry preventing electronic registration notification has been made for the vehicle (e.g. an alteration prohibition, an entry on a pending case or an entry on a conclusive decommission).
If an entry preventing electronic registration notification has been made to a vehicle, the online service will announce the impediment, and the service event will be interrupted.
What should I do if the registration certificate I have ordered does not come in the mail?
You should wait for 14 days after the day you submitted the order. After this time, you can, within seven days, obtain a new certificate free of charge at any inspection office that provides vehicle registration services.
What happens if I use a vehicle that has been decommissioned from traffic?
If you use in traffic a vehicle that has been decommissioned, the police may confiscate the registration plates and registration certificate.
For vehicles subject to vehicle tax, the vehicle tax is debited for the period of use as residual tax, and an additional tax for the vehicle tax as penalty. The amount of the additional tax is the twelve-month tax times five, in any case always at least EUR 1,000. The Finnish Motor Insurers' Centre charges a payment for the absence of insurance for the period when the vehicle was not covered by insurance.
I am buying a new car. How can I ensure that the car is not currently decommissioned?
Can I obtain information on vehicles that have been registered abroad?
The Vehicular and Driver Data Register only contains data on vehicles currently or previously registered in mainland Finland.
Does the register contain information on the insurance company used for the vehicle?
Yes, it does. The register shows the start date of insurance and the name of the insurance company.
I am not entirely sure of all the characters in the registration number. Can I still search for vehicle information?
The full registration number is required as a search element in the case of register queries sent to the Finnish Transport Safety Agency as single queries (over the Internet, as text messages and via the telephone service).
What if vehicle information is not found when I search for it using the registration number?
In this case, it is likely that the vehicle has been deregistered for an extended period of time, or the registration number has been changed. I do not want my address information to be obtainable on the basis of my vehicle's registration number. What can I do?
You can prohibit the disclosure of your address from the Vehicular and Driver Data Register. Following the entry of the prohibition, your address information will no longer be available e.g. by text message or telephone service. Prohibiting address disclosure will not prevent the handover of name and vehicle information. See the Information Disclosure Ban page for more detailed instructions on how to do this.
A duplicate driving license
I got married and changed my name. Can I order a new driving license by using Trafi´s e-Services?
You can use e-Services, if you have already been granted a new passport after the name change and a new signature was added to the passport. Otherwise you will have to provide a new signature at an Ajovarma service point and apply for a new driving licence there.
I am currently under a driving ban. Can I order a new driving license by using the e-Services, so that I can drive as soon as the driving ban has ended?
You can't order a duplicate driving license if you are under a driving ban. The police must first lift the driving ban before you can order a new license using the e-Services.
The address shown in the e-Services is false. What should I do?
You can check your address information using the Population Register Center's e-service https://verkkopalvelu.vrk.fi/Omat/Etusivu.aspx or from your local register office. According to Finnish legislation, you must always submit a notification of move if you move permanently into a new apartment or if your temporary stay at another address is longer than three months. You can submit a notification of move using the online service http://www.posti.fi/changeaddress/. If the address shown in the e-Services is still not correct after the notification, you can contact Trafi's customer service (tel. 029 534 5113 or e-mail: neuvonta(at)trafi.fi).
Disabled parking permit
I have a valid disabled parking permit but it was stolen. Can I order a duplicate permit with the same information?
In order to minimize the misuse of disabled parking permits, you can't order a duplicate permit by using the E-services. You can apply for a duplicate at an Ajovarma service point. Before granting the duplicate, Ajovarma will check the information of your previous permit from the police or from Trafi's register.
The address shown in the e-Services is false. What should I do?
You can check your address information using the Population Register Center's e-service https://verkkopalvelu.vrk.fi/Omat/Etusivu.aspx or from your local register office. According to Finnish legislation, you must always submit a notification of move if you move permanently into a new apartment or if your temporary stay at another address is longer than three months. You can submit a notification of move using the online service http://www.posti.fi/changeaddress/. I have a comprehensive medical report for the sake of renewing my driving licence. Can I use it when applying for a disabled parking permit?
The comprehensive medical report can't be used. You must provide a "Medical certificate for a disabled parking permit" as an attachment to the application. The doctor can print the certificate material from Trafi's website: http://www.trafi.fi/en/road/i_have_a_driving_licence/driver_s_health
